What does your role involve?

I am responsible for the Operational side of the Finance team.  This includes the management and development of 9 members of the team and covers Treasury, AP, Billing and Collections. 

I am required to ensure compliance within the team in relation to external and internal policies, as well as our own internal processes.  A large part of my role covers the firms Finance related systems and I work closely with the IT team. I am a member of the Steering Group for our Practice Management System, I sit on Project Boards for the implementation of new Finance systems and I often attend external user groups, roadshows and conferences being held by our system suppliers or other law firms.

 

What’s the most demanding part of your job?

Working in business services and managing a team that is providing that service to our lawyers can often be very demanding. From time to time things will go wrong that is beyond mine or the teams’ control – the online banking system crashing in the midst of a large property completion for example – and it is my responsibility to keep the lawyers fully informed when things like this happen so that they can manage the demands of their clients.  That said, I thrive under pressure and it’s at times like that when I’m needed to get more involved in the day to day issues within the team that I can provide support to both my team and the lawyers and this is something that I really enjoy.

 

What’s your career background?

I have worked in the legal sector for the past 18 years, experiencing both large and small firms. 

 

How does Farrers differ from other law firms?

I have spent the majority of my career so far at Farrers and during that time I have experienced many changes.  One thing that always remains consistent is the one firm mentality, you are never made to feel like a number and your opinion always counts.  It is the type of firm where you are encouraged to get to know people at all levels and in my opinion that helps make it such a friendly place to work in.  Farrers encourages promotion from within, they support their talented individuals and provide great guidance and support to assist you in furthering your skills, education and career.
