Farrers appoints immigration specialist to strengthen team

London, 12 May 2016: Farrer & Co has appointed Sharmila Mehta as a Consultant.

Mehta has been practising corporate and private immigration law for 22 years and is a leading expert in the field. From 1999 until 2014, she was a partner at Magrath LLP, and co-led its UK Immigration Group, where she acted for major investment banks and global commodity clients, as well as influential business people, wealthy families and entrepreneurs. She has acted in highly sensitive cases around the world including Russia and the Middle East, where she has become known as a significant authority.

London, 3 February 2016: The Supreme Court has modernised family law’s treatment of separating families in a majority 3-2 judgement which stops children being in a legal limbo when they are taken abroad by one of the parents.

The Supreme Court will consider the complex issues of habitual residence, the definition of parenthood and the power of the English Court to make orders about British nationals resident overseas at an important hearing next week.

The case, which was heard at the Court of Appeal in January and May 2015, has been expedited by the Supreme Court due to its significance both for the family involved and its repercussions for international family law in general.

Laurence Stracey Debate 2015

This year's Laurence Stracey debate saw The Right Honourable Clare Short and Daniel Stilitz QC, propose the motion  " British workers have the most to lose from a Brexit ." The motion was opposed by John Baron MP, Member of Parliament for Basildon and Billericay and Jane Mulcahy QC.

The motion was carried 99 to 93.

On Thursday 24 September, the Farrer & Co Tax team held their fifth annual Tax Debate at the Royal College of Surgeons. This year’s motion was: “The nation deserves a tax system that looks like someone designed it on purpose”, with David Goldberg QC of Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers and Aparna Nathan of Devereux Chambers proposing the motion, while David Southern QC of Temple Tax Chambers and Michael Thomas of Gray’s Inn Tax Chambers opposed it.
