John is a Consultant in the IP and Commercial Team. He has over 30 years experience of IP and IT —both contentious and non-contentious. He is also an acknowledged expert in aspects of public law, particularly relating to universities, research based organisations, medical institutions and charities.


Recent examples of John's work are:

  • Advising a university on the application of European Directives to its profession-based courses;
  • Advising a medical college on the patentability of a model for trauma-based teaching;
  • Representing a client in the Patents County Court on a case involving copyright ownership of film footage;
  • A high court trade mark infringement action for a client in the property sector;
  • Representing an NHS Trust in a Freedom Information Act case in the Information Tribunal;
  • Acting for a university in defending an action on the applicability of regulations relating to postgraduate medical training;
  • Drafting a suite of agreements giving web-based access to psychometric testing tools.

John has been published in the “Research Handbook on Intellectual Property Licensing” in January 2013 writing Chapter 7 “The licensing of trade secrets and know-how.’ The text book 'brings together a unique collection of World renowned experts' - James E. Malackowski, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Ocean Tomo LLC.

John focuses on IP and IT and has extensive experience in the contentious and non-contentious spheres. His recent work has focussed on entrepreneurial businesses in the technology sector, ranging from e-Publishers, computer-gaming developers, major pharmaceutical companies, banks and other financial institutions, manufacturing companies, fast food providers, to software developers. Examples of his work in the technology sector range from High Court infringement actions (patents, trade mark and trade secrets) to transactional work including technology-based corporate acquisitions, patent and know-how licensing and advice on aspects of ecommerce.

John has substantial experience in acting for higher education institutions, particularly in complex, high value and high profile litigation. He has fought over 30 judicial reviews, virtually all for universities, each of them successfully.

This work extends to handling complex internal inquiries involving scientific fraud, plagiarism, conflicts of interest and IP-related issues. His work for universities has recently included successfully defending an institution in an 8-day case involving the application of its regulations, a 3-week internal inquiry (chaired by a retired Court of Appeal judge) into drug trial protocols; a change of name/trade mark case and an internal inquiry into the suspension of a governing body member.
