Tom leads Farrer & Co's Reputation Management practice. He builds and implements solutions for clients facing the most complex reputational challenges, many of them cross-border. Tom advises the firm’s clients on all issues affecting reputation, privacy and information.

Tom's work includes providing pre-action and pre-publication advice, as well as litigation and injunctions. He has extensive experience protecting clients from the serious impacts of online mis- and disinformation, and artificial intelligence.

Tom has acted for high-profile individuals and senior executives, as well as some of the world’s leading brands, companies and institutions. Tom takes a holistic approach to protecting his clients’ interests and understands that legal expertise must stand alongside other vital skill sets. He has built a formidable network of advisers to call upon to ensure the best possible outcome for clients.

Tom advises clients on all aspects of reputation management and media law, including traditional media coverage, social media content and search engine results, defamation and disinformation, and online harassment. Tom's advice also increasingly covers synthetic and machine-generated content such as deepfakes and other AI-generated information.

In addition, Tom advises corporate and institutional clients on disputes and contentious issues relating to confidential information and data. He has assisted clients on claims arising out of data breaches, subject access requests and theft of confidential information.

Tom is the firm's lead for US and North America business development and is a member of the graduate recruitment panel. He is a member of ITech Law and is a regular commentator on media and information law matters.

Significant reported cases Tom has been involved in include:

Cole v Marlborough College: acting for the Defendant, a leading independent school, in High Court proceedings arising out of a contested data subject access request. 

WFZ v BBC: successfully obtaining an urgent interim injunction on behalf of the claimant, a high-profile individual, to prevent the broadcast of information concerning a criminal investigation that was both a breach of privacy and contempt of court. 

Executor of HRH, Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh and Attorney General v Guardian News and Media: acting for the Executor in successfully resisting an appeal to the Court of Appeal by The Guardian in respect of the process for the sealing up of the late Duke's will.

Onwude v BMJ Publishing Group & others: advising The British Medical Journal, its editor and a journalist in respect of the successful defence at trial of defamation proceedings brought by a doctor who sought to complain about The BMJ's reporting of Medical Practitioners Tribunal proceedings. 

Glenn v Kline: obtaining default judgment and substantial damages for the claimant, the former Chief Executive of The Football Association, in respect of a concerted campaign of defamation and harassment.
