Geoffrey Richards

Geoffrey Richards is the founding member of the firm's employment practice. With more than 30 years' experience in the field, sources confirm that they have great faith in his 'excellent judgement.'

Chambers & Partners

Geoffrey is the senior member of Farrer & Co’s Employment Law Team, which he created, and has been a partner in the firm since 1979.  He has practised in the labour/employment law field for 35+ years, not least in the media and banking sectors.  He generally acts for employers, but sometimes for senior executives, including those in listed companies.

He played a significant role in the revolution in labour relations in the UK national newspaper industry in the 1980s and 1990s, and continues to have a particular interest in collective issues, including recognition and derecognition.  His cases include the House of Lords decision in Wilson –v- Associated Newspapers Limited (which deals with the border between individual and collective trade union rights) and News Group Newspapers Limited –v- SOGAT ’82 (a leading case on mass picketing).

He has been a Director of Legal Projects and President of the Labour Law Commission of the UIA and is a member of various employment law bodies, including the Industrial Law Society.  In addition to his employment law practice, he does a certain amount of corporate/commercial and private client work.
