Children at Clerkenwell Parochial are always eager to see their reading volunteer as they make it fun rather than a chore. The time that Farrers and Beanstalk spend reading with our children is a fundamental part of the school’s commitment to secure every child as a reader.
Matt O’Brien, Clerkenwell Parochial Headteacher
Since April 2008, over 45 Farrer volunteers have been assisting children at Clerkenwell Parochial School with their reading through a scheme run by a charity called Beanstalk. Volunteers are paired and spend 25 minutes at the school on alternate weeks with their child reading, talking, listening, writing, playing games and generally mentoring the children. There are currently 12 Farrer volunteers visiting the school involved with the scheme.
The scheme has had a positive impact on the children's literary skills and confidence and, since the inception of the scheme, there have been more than twenty children whose reading and behaviour has improved so significantly that they have "graduated" off the scheme. The reading support provided by Farrer employees has been welcomed and encouraged by the teachers at Clerkenwell Parochial and OFSTED in their most recent report on the school. VRH also regularly expresses its gratitude to F&Co for the volunteering and financial support provided by the firm.
We have also received the following messages from Clerkenwell Parochial School:
"Walk into Clerkenwell Parochial School library on any day during the week and you'll see a strange sight - children happily giving up part of their lunch break to read stories and share games with volunteers from Farrers. A team of fifteen trained and highly committed volunteers attend the school on a weekly basis and over time develop a friendship with children at Clerkenwell based around shared reading."
