Joined Farrer & Co as an articled clerk in 1976; qualified as a solicitor in 1979; and made partner in 1985. James was senior partner from 2008 - 2011. James became Solicitor to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1994 and President of Holborn Law Society in 1996/7.

James is the senior property partner in the Property Department. He acts for a broad range of clients dealing with all types of property including commercial, rural, agricultural and residential.

He was appointed Solicitor to the Duchy of Cornwall in 1994 and deals with their commercial and development property portfolio as well as advising on the rural estate.   

Within the firm he is a member of the Landed Estates Group and chairs the Private Banking and Investment Management Group.  He is a former Senior Partner of the firm.
