FAQs

What tips can you provide to Work Experience applicants?

We have produced a helpful overview of the key information we require and tips to help your application stand out. Scroll down to read them.

Do you recruit on a rolling basis?

No, we wait until our application window has closed before informing candidates if they have been successful or not.

Can I re-apply if I am unsuccessful?

Yes, there is always lots of competition for available places. We would encourage candidates to apply to us again if they are initially unsuccessful but still eligible and interested in joining us. These candidates should ensure they have addressed any feedback from their previous application and not submit exactly the same application again.

Will the recruitment process accommodate adjustments?

Yes. We encourage anyone requiring adjustments for whatever reason to let the Graduate & Solicitor Apprentice team know so we can implement these. All information disclosed will be managed confidentially.

Do you run any open days?

Yes, we will be hosting two virtual open evenings on 21 October and 18 November, which will be repeated content so you will only need to attend one or the other. Anyone is eligible to attend and includes a variety of talks about what it is like to work at Farrer & Co.

We also host open days as part of our partnerships with external associations, such as Young Professionals. Details for how to sign up can be found on their respective websites.

These open days offer candidates the opportunity to find out more about our firm and the recruitment process in more detail as well as having their questions answered by individuals across the firm.

Can I use GenAI in my application?

When it comes to recruitment, we realise that GenAI can help candidates with understanding questions and generating a structure to follow as a starting point when providing answers. However, we strongly encourage candidates to avoid copying, pasting and then submitting all or large parts of their application from a GenAI tool. Instead, candidates should tailor and personalise their responses to avoid submitting a generic application which is unlikely to be successful.

Our Graduate & Solicitor Apprentice Team does not use Generative AI to review applications or conduct interviews at any stage of the recruitment process.

How can you develop your commercial awareness to give your application the best chance of success?

We’ve produced a guide for anyone starting their career and looking to understand more about the world of work.

Need help?

If you experience any difficulties with the online application process, please contact our Recruitment team who will be happy to help. We want to ensure candidates have the best experience possible. If you require any adjustments during the application process, please get in touch.

Hints & tips for work experience applications

Academics

This opportunity is for candidates studying A-levels (or equivalent) at the time of this October work experience scheme.

Our minimum academic requirements are five GCSEs at grades 4-9 (or equivalent points) including Maths and English, unless there are mitigating circumstances. Please use the section provided to give details of any mitigating circumstances you would like us to consider.

Work history

We are interested in all your work experience whether virtual or in person; paid or voluntary; legal or non-legal; UK-based or international.

We are looking for candidates to tell us what their responsibilities were, describe the skills acquired and explain how those skills could transfer into a career in law. You can find a list of skills and qualities we look for in candidates here.

Responsibilities, extracurricular activities and interests

We want to find out as much as possible about you, beyond your studies, to determine how you manage your time effectively and how you think these activities will be helpful to a career in law. What are your hobbies and interests? Do you hold any positions of responsibility? What books, articles or podcasts have helped to bolster your knowledge of the legal sector? Have you attended any legal open days/events? These can be current or historic activities and virtual or in person.

We are looking for candidates who have a wide range of interests and/or have undertaken a substantial commitment over an extended period of time.

What are you hoping to learn during the work experience (in a legal or business support role)?

We want to hear why you are interested in gaining work experience in a law firm (whether in a legal or business support team, or both), how you think this experience will benefit your future career path, and some of the key things you are hoping to learn during the work experience, if selected.

Why have you chosen to apply to Farrer & Co?

You should use this section to give us examples of what made you apply to Farrer & Co and what stands out for you when you compare us to other law firms.

Before answering this question, take your time to research our firm and specifically our solicitor apprenticeship programme. We recommend you take advantage of the huge selection of articles, blog posts, podcasts and videos available on our website and social media platforms.
