If you pass our proofreading task, we will confirm your place on one of our virtual assessment days. If selected to participate in one of our virtual assessment days you will be asked to:
- a written task, and
- a group exercise.
We will use these assessments to assist us in selecting our 30 vacation scheme attendees. Please contact our team if you require any adjustments to enable you to participate in our recruitment process.
1. Written task – 30 minutes duration
You will receive a fictitious scenario, such as the following example:
Amy, a senior associate, has asked you to join her on a call with Carolyn, the Chair of the Board of Trustees for an anti-bullying charity on Friday. Carolyn is asking for some advice about a dispute between one of their board members and the director of the charity which was overheard at a recent fundraising event by one of the event's sponsors.
Ahead of the call, Amy has asked you to email the Chair in order to obtain any further information or documents that you might need to be able to advise the charity. Amy has asked to review your draft email before you send it.
You will also be provided with an email exchange between the Chair and Amy to review.
You will then be asked to prepare a draft email response.
While no prior legal knowledge will be required to complete this task, we will be looking out for the below points:
- Is the email appropriately addressed?
- Is it structured in a logical way?
- Is the spelling, punctuation and grammar accurate?
- Have the issues been considered logically?
- Have relevant documents / information been identified?
Potential examples might include: the complaint made to HR; the exchange as reported by the charity sponsor; specific employment policies; or the charity’s anti-bullying policy.
2. Group task – 45 minutes duration
You will join a group of other candidates who will then be split into two sub-groups. You will all receive a scenario, such as the following example:
"Should everyone be able to enjoy protection from media intrusion into their private life, or are there categories of individuals / circumstances where one’s reasonable expectation of privacy must fall away?"
You will be part of a (hypothetical) campaign group with a strong view "for" or "against" this question.
Sub-teams will then be given 20 minutes to separately discuss their arguments (either “for” or “against” the scenario, depending on which they have been assigned).
At the end of this time, sub-teams will come together for a debate and aiming to ultimately reach a joint decision. The group will be given 20 minutes to achieve this.
No prior legal knowledge will be required to complete this task. Candidates will be assessed on the following:
- General early impressions - Engaged in the process, good understanding of task.
- People management - Demonstrates ability to bring others into the discussion rather than just taking charge.
- Oral communication - Able to explain and express ideas clearly and concisely.
- Contribution - Added to the quality of the discussion whether helping to reinforce, clarify or broaden views and issues – looking more for content quality of the contribution rather than speaking a lot.
- Teamwork - Demonstrated respect for others’ views and opinions, healthy collaboration rather than combative competition; able to listen to others.
