Sam provides practical and focused advice on business-critical areas across the fields of data protection, intellectual property and commercial contracts.

Sam is a trusted adviser to clients across the commercial, education and not for profit sectors. He is a data protection specialist with expertise across the full range of GDPR compliance issues and managing complex information rights requests.

He also advises on the protection, transfer and commercialisation of IP rights, often in the context of commercial collaborations and corporate due diligence exercises where IP and data are central.

Having worked in senior roles in government and communications before becoming a lawyer, Sam brings a wider perspective to bear in his legal advice, understanding the complex contexts and issues facing organisations.

Expertise

Education

Sam brings in-depth knowledge of the education sector from a previous career in policy and communications, including at one of the country’s top schools operators. He advises leading schools and universities on a wide range of data protection, IP and contract issues, and has particular specialisms in complex information law issues (eg safeguarding and employment related data sharing and information rights requests) and international commercial collaborations. Sam has also developed a particular interest in the interplay between education and technology, advising EdTech clients on the legal and regulatory issues involved, particularly from a data protection perspective. He gained front-line experience of the higher education sector when he worked as in-house legal adviser on a secondment to London Business School.

Not-for-Profit

Charities and cultural institutions seek Sam’s advice on data protection compliance (including around fundraising and direct marketing laws), the development of commercial contracts (often in the context of sponsorship deals) and brand protection/management.

Private Businesses

Sam advises businesses on commercial contract drafting and negotiation (including on issues around consumer law), international data sharing agreements and GDPR / direct marketing law compliance. He helps them respond to data breaches and information rights requests and in the management and protection of their intellectual property, particularly trade marks.
