Ian has a wide range of experience across private client, commercial and property law issues. He regularly works with clients as a non-executive board member or trustee, giving genuine depth to his practice and marking him out as a truly trusted adviser.

Ian is a private client lawyer who is most in demand as an experienced trusted adviser, drawing on his decades of experience to devise strategic solutions for clients, developing strong and lasting relationships with them. His client base ranges from successful entrepreneurs and fellow professionals, to public or quasi-public authorities and corporate clients, often with complex trust or constitutional issues. He advises on the creation of strategic joint ventures or partnership structures, often with a property focus, where his transactional experience gives him an edge.

Ian’s clients appreciate the care he devotes to really understanding the issues they are grappling with, meaning he is able to plan appropriately and deliver on their individual aspirations. This is particularly true where clients are focused on structuring, preserving and growing wealth on a generational basis. He is recognised for his commerciality, foresight and a pragmatic desire to get the best possible result in each scenario.

Ian advises large landed estates, particularly those facing succession or diversification issues, or to embark on development. His advice helps clients understand how best to structure those opportunities in line with their stewardship or heritage aspirations, or in providing an endowment for the future.

In addition, Ian acts for a number of public bodies and where there are the complex corporate or trust structures, advising on their ability to undertake transactions and enter into joint ventures.

Ian is adept at problem solving, particularly where there are complex tax structuring, succession or personal issues to be addressed, bringing to bear a combination of intellectual rigour and empathy. His long standing and loyal client base are testament to the effectiveness of Ian’s collaborative style and his ability help clients find the most effective solutions to the challenges they face.  In order to best support his clients, he works closely with the firm’s tax, property and corporate specialists, and his clients’ various external advisers.

Ian is experienced in the administration of complex estates often with global or cross border aspects.

Ian qualified as a solicitor in 1991. 

He is a qualified Mediator.


  • Ian is dual qualified in both England and Wales and Northern Ireland. He held the position as President of the Law Society in Northern Ireland in 2017 and continues to represent the Society both Nationally and Internationally on Brexit.

    Ian is a member of STEP and having served on Council for a number of years was elected to the Board in January 2018. In that role he has oversight of professional and policy related issues impacting on the issues that face wealthy international families.

    Ian sits as a Non-Executive Board Member on a number of private companies which are owned by clients and is a trustee for number of large private and public charities.
