Practice areas

  • Firm Management

Sue Shale has extensive experience in senior management and financial roles in professional service firms both in the UK and overseas. As Chief Financial Officer, she is a key part of the leadership team at Farrer & Co.

Chief Financial Officer and Partner, Sue plays a pivotal role at the intersection between the firm’s business service directors and its management board. She takes a strategic overview of the firm’s direction, encompassing both financial and operational affairs, as well as heading up the finance function, and sitting with the management board on an ex officio basis.

Sue is responsible for the development and overall control of matters relating to the firm’s financial policies, affairs and administration; she also chairs the firm’s Risk Management Committee and acts as its compliance officer.

Her approach to the role is characterised by a desire to ensure the firm’s operational processes support its measured organic growth and transparent culture, as well as empowering fee earners to provide the best service they can – whether with the introduction of the latest management information software, or regular financial literacy training.

Expertise

Sue qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG. She later spent over ten years with PwC in roles across Africa and Central and Eastern Europe, before returning to the UK to work at a major law firm as Head of Finance. She joined Farrer & Co as Director of Finance in 1999, becoming Chief Financial Officer in 2008.

Sue has a successful track record establishing and managing finance functions for professional services organisations (delivering tax, accountancy and overarching consultancy services).

Sue has been Treasurer of the Legal Finance Forum since 2004, is a committee member of the Solicitors Financial Management Group and is a Governor at two independent schools.
